Museum of the Romanian Peasant

This museum will tell you everything you need to know about the Romanian peasant life. In 1996 the Museum of the Romanian Peasant received the title of European Museum of the Year making it one of Europe’s leading museums of popular arts and traditions.

The construction of this building built in a neo-Romanian architectural style, started in 1912 and then stopped in 1916. It was completed in 1941.

During the communist years the museum was used as the Museum of the Communist Party. Today, there is still a room, in the basement, showing some items from the communist period.

In 1990 the museum received back its original destination, the one as the museum of the romanian peasant.

The museum houses today a large collection of religious icons, ceramics, wooden elements, furniture, textiles and traditional clothing. In one of the rooms you will see a traditional wood house more than 100 years old.

There is an audio guide available in Romanian, French, English and German and also a guide on request for groups.
